How does Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) cause edema? Edema or swelling is one
typical symptom appearing in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). It
usually takes place in patients’ double lower limbs or eyelids especially when
they get up in the morning. How does edema or swelling come into being? Edema is
a product which is caused by disorder metabolism of water and sodium in the
organic body. If the excessive water is more than 10% of the whole body, we call
it edema.
The reasons why edema appears are as follows:
Firstly, it is due to the decline of glomerular filtration rate. The
reabsorption of renal tubules to water and sodium decreases, which leads to the
retention of water and sodium.
Secondly, endocrine hormone can also lead to retention of water and sodium.
It is influenced by antidiuretic hormone, aldosterone, etc. When patients are
suffering from kidney disease, the secretion of endocrine hormone will be out of
balance, which leads to edema or swelling.
Thirdly, edema or swelling can also lead to the decrease of plasma oncotic
pressure. In this case, water in the body will move towards tissue space. When
patients are suffering from kidney disease, there is usually a large amount of
protein which leaks out into urine, which leads to hypoproteinemia. In this
case, plasma oncotic pressure will decrease, leading to renal edema.
Fourthly, nephritis is also a factor which can lead to edema or swelling.
Nephritis is a kind of immune disease. Immune reaction can also lead to the
damage of the whole capillaries. Their permeability can also increase. The water
flows to tissues, which leads to edema there.
Different kidney diseases have different degrees of edema as well. For
example, acute nephritis can lead to edema. Nephrotic Syndrome can lead to more
serious edema. From the above, we can get a conclusion that all renal edema is
based on the movement of water to tissues because of the retention of water and
sodium.
How to treat renal edema?
As we mentioned in the above, when renal tubules are damaged, the
reabsorption of renal tubules will also be influenced. In this case, water will
stay in the body, leading to edema. In most of time, diuretic is used. However,
it can not repair the damaged renal tubules and treat edema fundamentally. So
more and more CKD patients are searching a new method. Micro-Chinese Medicine
Osmotherapy can diminish edema from root. The detailed mechanism is as
follows:
Firstly, after Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy enters the body, it will
promote blood circulation and dissolve the stasis, which can improve the
micro-circulation of the kidney. Secondly, it can clear the stasis, and waste
things such as immune complex, which can be out of the body together with urine
and reduce the burden of the kidney. Thirdly, after the above steps, the inner
environment can be clearer than before. And the nutritious materials can play
roles in repairing damaged intrinsic cells by supplying oxygen, etc. Through
this, renal tubules can be repaired at the same time. After that, edema will
disappear as well.
